AUNJANUE ELLIS ON POWERHOUSE FANNIE LOU HAMER: SPRING 2022
Actor Aunjanue Ellis may be best known for performances in the film “King Richard,” and HBO series “Lovecraft Country.” But personal passion continues to bring her to the table. And, in Ellis graces one of two covers for Culturs Winter 2021 kickoff to its Year of Latin America.
In this issue Ellis and Director Christine Swanson pay homage to Fannie Lou Hamer, a U.S. civil rights advocate.

AWARD WINNING ACTOR AUNJANUE ELLIS
Aunjanue Ellis’ IMDB mini bio sates that she was born in San Francisco, Calif. And that she graduated from Brown University. Also that she later attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. During her career, Ellis performed on Off-Broadway theater, appeared in many film, and had roles on television. In film, she is best known the roles below.
- “Men of Honor” (2000),
- “Undercover Brother” (2002),
- “Ray” (2004), and
- “The Help” (2011).
- On television, she’s known for 2020’s “Lovecraft Country.” And the 2015 mini-series, “The Book of Negroes.”
U.S. FREEDOM RIGHTS ACTIVIST FANNIE LOU HAMER
According to Ellis, in 1964 Hamer and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party boarded a bus to the Democratic National Convention in New Jersey. But, “It put the whole convention into a turmoil,” said Ellis. Lyndon Johnson felt his presidency threatened by Mrs. Hamer, by the efforts of the Party.

Ellis began to write a screenplay about Hamer. Not long after that she told Swanson, who was her director in the 2020 Lifetime TV film “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.”
