Meet adventure journalist James Edward Mills
First, James Edward Mills is a freelance journalist and contributing writer for outdoor-focused print and online publications. He contributes to “National Geographic Adventure,” “Rock and Ice magazine,” “Alpinist magazine,” “Standup Paddle Magazine,” “Elevation Outdoors magazine,” “Women’s Adventure,” “The Clymb,” “Park Advocate,” “High Country News,” the “Appalachia Journal,” “The Guardian,” “Outside Magazine” and “Land & People.”
And Mills is a 2014 Fellow of the Mountain & Wilderness Writing Program of the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada.

Mills is a 2016 recipient of the Paul K. Petzoldt Award For Environmental Education. And he is the co-writer/co-producer of the documentary film “An American Ascent.”
In 2020 “The Adventure Gap” was named one of the 10 “Outdoor Books that Shaped the Last Decade.”

Mills was named a Yosemite National Park Centennial Ambassador in 2016. This award is in recognition of his work in sharing the Buffalo Soldiers’ important history and legacy. And for Mills’ portrayal of their efforts in creating the National Park Service.
He is currently a faculty assistant at the University of Wisconsin Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. Mills teaches a summer course for undergraduate students on diversity, equity, and inclusion in outdoor recreation and public land management titled “Outdoors For All.”
