Learning How To Be a Real Role Model in ‘The Underdoggs’

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards: How Real was the Diversity?

This week, Jhendi joins Doni and Dr. Rhonda to talk about the controversy of JBalvin at the African Entertainment Awards USA in 2021.

Join us to learn about the details of the nomination, what reggaeton is, JBalvin’s reaction, and how the music industry responded to the event.

“This blew up because . . . the organization said it’s not based on race, but even if it’s not based on race, the guy doesn’t even contribute to any Afro-Latino music at all,” Jhendi says.

“If you are in Colombia, you will understand what Afro-Latino music is, and how it is, basically. And so his music is basically 100 percent reggaeton, and apparently the argument is reggaeton has some Afro beats in it and the ancestors used to listen to something similar and I mean there’s a huge, huge disagreement around that,” Jhendy adds.

Definition of reggaeton:

reggaeton /ˈrɛɡeɪtəʊn/

noun — a form of dance music of Puerto Rican origin, characterized by a fusion of Latin rhythms, dancehall, and hip-hop or rap.
