Hidden Diversity in Music

Music has a large importance in most cultures. It provides an outlet for any occasion like praising, celebration and much more. It also links to spirituality and religion. A lot of artists today have hidden diversity within their music. The three types of music that I am focusing on today are African, Mexican and Native American.

African culture

African music is very important within the culture. and artists today have a lot of hidden diversity within it. According to Wendy Ngcobo, “African singers use a wide variety of sounds. Within a single performance, a singer shifts from an open, relaxed tone to one that is tighter and more constricted…. The pitch level of the sound determines significance in many African languages.”

You can see an example of this in the soundtrack to Marvel’s “Black Panther” movie, specifically in the song “Pray for me” by The Weeknd. The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is a Cross Cultural Kid (CCK). According to his biography, Abel was born in Canada to two Ethiopian immigrant parents and later moved to the United States. Near the end of the song, you can hear an African call while it ends and fades out.

Mexican music is special because depending on the type, you can tell where the person singing is from. According to the article “Traditional Mexican Music“:

Music is a very important part of Mexican culture and is always part of a celebration, whether big or small. The music of Mexico sings of love, country, passion, history, legend and oppression, among other things.

A lot of current Mexican musical artists have become Cross Cultural Adults because of the way that they had to adapt in order to apply to the United States and Mexico. Some artists even started learning English in order for their careers to takeoff.

Native American

According to the article, “Native American Music“:

For the Native American, song is traditionally the chief means of communicating with the supernatural powers, and music is seldom performed for its own sake; definite results, such as the bringing of rain, success in battle, or the curing of the sick, are expected from music.

This is the type that focuses on more spiritual things. There are many Native American songs that promote mental and physical health.
