If you’re a fan of the cross-cultural hit movie “Kpop Demon Hunters,” a new crowdfunding campaign for “Tokoloshe Hunters,” a manga-style graphic novel, is underway that has a slightly similar African-centered theme to it.

“Tokoloshe Hunters” is an urban fantasy, supernatural, monster-fighting manga inspired by Southern African mythology about a young man named Aneunhu Phiri, who wants to join a Tokoloshe Hunter company. The only problem is that he’s half-human, half-Tokoloshe.

“Tokoloshe Hunters” is being made by an all-African creative team with experience at Disney, Netflix and more. Published by Black-owned Etan Comics, it was created, written and illustrated by Bill Masuku, with colors by Toyin Ajetunmobi.

“The Tokoloshe are monsters made of lies. The bigger the lie, the stronger the monster, and a massive Tokoloshe outbreak is leading to a war between the humans and monsters,” Masuku says in the video announcing the crowdfunding campaign.

Etan Comics is a Pan-African entertainment company bringing African stories to life using comics and graphic novels.

The Tokoloshe are monsters made of lies.

“Our stories are grounded in African history, culture and folklore,” the company says. “Our mission is to tell beautifully told stories that celebrate, empower and connect families to their rich African heritage.

“Why? Because everyone deserves to believe in themselves, live unapologetically and feel like they belong. We also want to preserve our rich heritage and the best way to do that is by sharing it with the world.”
