Depression & Lost Friendships: A TCK’s Story

In Part 1, we looked at the origins of rapper and hip hop artist Logic. In this part, we look at how his music has evolved.

Hip hop artist Logic has made many changes throughout his music and brought in other elements to diversify his sound. He was trying to keep things fresh and new. Throughout the creative process, there were moments in his career he took dramatic steps to change the way of his music.

LEAP OF FAITH

Soon after Logic released the mixtape album “Bobby Tarantino,” he felt like his creativity was not as on point as with his other albums. Something was missing. The upcoming project title “Everybody” was a different type of concept. One of the tracks is called “1-800-273-8255,” the national suicide hotline. Logic was able to write the song but was putting it off because the concept goes into a different perspective instead of his own, which he states feels like acting. He has this perspective in the “Under Pressure” album through his sister’s and brother’s viewpoints.

Logic created this song through his fans and told them that his songs had changed their lives. Peace, love and positivity have been the image of Logic’s music and character. Open arms and bring people together.

After recording the song, he added two features to the album: Khalid and Alessia Cara. Khalid is a U.S. singer who originated from Fort Stewart, Ga., but moved to multiple states, including Germany, because of his military family. Alessia Cara is a Canadian singer-songwriter of Italian roots.

VMAs

Logic was given the opportunity to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards with Khalid and Alessia Cara. This was an impactful moment for Logic and the people seeing the performance.

Bringing people from different backgrounds together shows support for whoever is going through mental health struggles. Suicide was never a conversating topic in the mainstream but having the 1-800 performance spotlighted that subject. According to CNN, the suicide prevention hotline had spiked after the performance. John Draper, director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, said:

The impact has been pretty extraordinary. On the day the song was released, we had the second-highest call volume in the history of our service.

LOGIC AND HIS EVER-CHANGING MUSIC

Logic has taken giant leaps when it comes to music. He has done so much for creativity and perspective.

Recently he released an album called “Supermarket,” which followed a soundtrack relevant to the reader. It was very different from all of his other albums, mainly featuring alternative/indie-based music.

Though the soundtrack still has remnants of rap/hip-hop, other elements such as R&B, Alternative and Indie can be heard too. Some of the samples are “Can I Kick It?” by A Tribe Called Quest, “Just a Friend” by Biz Markie and “Hail Mary” by Makaveli featuring Kastro, Prince Ital Joe and Young Noble.

Logic expanded his taste of music-making, leading into different aspects of art.

Joshua Chacon was originally from Los Angeles, California but moved to Colorado when he was 4 years. Though he'd lived most of his life in a small town called Brush he would like to move to something bigger and more different than the same old buildings and people. To be honest, he does not get into a publication that much, he does like one media outline that does not leave any hard truth. And that truth is called Vice. Instead of giving the viewer a bias opinion, the media tries to explain whats going on with the subject and the major issues are. Though it is hard to be not biased, Josh understands the importance of the truth that needs to be put out even though it can be brutal.
