Ever wondered what it must be like to be a porter when climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain?

In the latest episode of “Superskilled” on National Geographic’s YouTube channel, adventurer Eva zu Beck travels to Tanzania where she joins a team of female high-altitude porters in an attempt to understand how they manage to carry heavy loads to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Although women have only recently joined the male porters in this line of work, they carry the same amount of weight (20 kilograms, or 44 pounds) as they supply tourist camps along the mountain routes.

Zu Beck takes on the challenge of replicating what the porters do, learning about their methods for altitude adaptation, strength training and physical technique. This episode shows viewers that anyone can build up solid strength and endurance from scratch.

“Superskilled” is a four-part series where zu Beck investigates how we can all tap into our innate human skills, from building strength to developing endurance and cultivating our minds.
