Anya Taylor-Joy has made a remarkable achievement in such a short period. She has amazing qualities that earned her success. Specifically, she has a strong commitment to her profession and psychological hardiness.

Interestingly, Taylor-Joy portrayed a character in Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” that reflects much of herself. There is parallelism between Taylor-Joy and Beth that she played in that film.

Firstly, the similarity between Taylor-Joy and Beth is their childhood struggles. They both had to overcome hardship growing up. Taylor-Joy had to go through bullying and loneliness in her childhood. Beth had to deal with drug and alcohol addiction.

According to an interview in W Magazine, Taylor-Joy said:

Someone tagged me in a picture of a fish and they were like this is you because your eyes are like here, I was really upset about it and I didn’t enjoy it and I kind of stopped looking in mirrors for a very long time.

Also, according to an ET CANADA article, Taylor-Joy said:

I joke about this, but I’m kind of serious when I say that the characters in the Harry Potter books were my friends. I spent the first two years in England playing hand-clap games with plants — if you slap them hard enough, they clap back — and learning how to read. That was my existence. I didn’t hang out with other kids.

And in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes TV, she said:

I think the main thing between the two of us is Beth is an inherently lonely person and I definitely had that growing up.

Plus, according to an Esquire article:

The main conflict in The Queen’s Gambit is not between the protagonist Beth Harmon and her brilliant opponents across the chess board. It’s between her and her own struggles with addiction.

Secondly, they both wanted recognition in the world of their passion. Taylor-Joy focused on acting while getting through depression that came from bullying. Likewise, Beth overcame drug and alcohol while pursuing becoming a chess star.

According to the ET CANADA article, Taylor-Joy said, “It just really pushed me. Much the same way as Beth needed chess, I needed acting.”

Anya Taylor-Joy shares similarities with the character she played, Beth, in “The Queen’s Gambit.” They both needed to go through a hardship growing up and had passion for something. Such similarities endowed Taylor-Joy to be perfect one to take on the role of Beth.
