My name is Andrea Bazoin, and I am a translator. In high school, I used my then-limited Spanish to translate for the Central American immigrants who came to my checkout line at the grocery store in our small Nebraska town. Interpreting their “Cuanto cuesta?” was helpful, but I knew what I was really translating was a message of welcome.

She wouldn’t reunite with her mother and brother for five years and her father for another 18.

Persepolis is a autobiographical graphic novel written and illustrated by Marjane Satrapi, an Iranian-French cartoonist. It tells the tale of Marji, a young girl living in Tehran just before the 1979 Iranian Revolution. This accounts her life before, during, and after the Iranian Revolution, where she lives through threats to her wellbeing and xenophobia.

After decades of demands for democratic reform, the recent Hong Kong protests have created a citywide chaos in an attempt to make the cause a known worldwide issue. Their cause has the potential to impact the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Federation of Association (FIFA) in the near future.
