The latest film in the Star Trek franchise, “Star Trek: Section 31,” starring Malaysian Chinese actress Michelle Yeoh, premieres globally today.
In the movie, Yeoh reprises her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou – a character she played in “Star Trek: Discovery” – who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.
As “Section 31” director and executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi told “Entertainment Weekly” recently:
At the end of the day, each scene usually belongs to one particular character. In Section 31, 99 percent of those scenes belong to Michelle Yeoh’s character, Philippa Georgiou. So then what you have is a movie that is visually inspired by who she is. She is unpredictable, she is dangerous, she is relentless, she also has discovered that she’s kind and has the opportunity for redemption. Instead of a man on fire, you have a woman on fire and a visual design that is unpredictable for the first time in this modern era.
“Section 31” also stars Omari Hardwick (“Power”), Emmy winner Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”), Robert Kazinsky (“Pacific Rim”), Kacey Rohl (“Hannibal”), Sven Ruygrok (“One Piece”), James Hiroyuki Liao (“Barry”), Humberly Gonzalez (“Ginny & Georgia”) and Joe Pingue (“The Expanse”). Miku Martineau (Kate) portrays a young Philippa Georgiou.
The movie premieres today, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available.
