Cultural Influence Within His Fashion

When you live a lifestyle where eyes are constantly on you, watching your every move, it makes sense that you may be worried about expressing yourself in a more taboo way. However, in her article “The Benefits of Experiencing Another Culture are Immense,” writer Jennifer Hancock suggests that experiencing other cultures “builds confidence and empathy and strengthens our sense of self while at the same time helping us to feel connected to others.” With that being said, the various cultures that Styles experienced while on tour with band One Direction and as a solo artist has helped his confidence flourish. They left him feeling inspired to play around with different fashion styles as his career has progressed throughout the years.

If you feel safe in the area that you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you are capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.

Styles has expressed in the past how he has always had a strong admiration for clothing and the power it holds. However he lacked the confidence to dress the way he wanted to. His experience as a Third Culture Adult, traveling across a multitude of countries and cultures, helped Styles gain this confidence. He recently appeared on the cover of Vogue wearing a beautifully designed, custom made, Gucci ballgown. Despite some backlash rooted from hate, the majority of people fawned over the alluring photograph of the man in the dress.

  1. This article caught my eye right away! I am a fan of Harry Styles, but I sadly do not know very much about himself as a person. For example, his experience as a Third Culture Adult, traveling across a multitude of countries and cultures is not something I knew about him or expected. I can see now that his experiences with multiple cultures have helped his music, style, career, and confidence flourish into what it is today! Thank you for writing this article.

  2. I have always known Harry Styles was from a different country, but I didn’t know much about him and how it shaped him and his future. So, this article was very appealing. I find it really interesting in this article how it talks about being immersed in so many different cultures has impacted the clothes he wears. I never really thought of that before, but it makes sense that it would happen. However, I found it interesting that Harry said it wasn’t necessarily the clothes that were influenced by culture, but that his experience in different cultures helped him grow his confidence to wear whatever clothes he wants. After learning more about Harry Styles in this article, I can see that the different cultures he has experiences has had an impact on so many areas on his life such as his music, style, and overall personality.

  3. This is such a thoughtful article that keeps you interested! I’m not so much a fan of Harry, however I do enjoy the things he does. I love his style and this article explains how he is so confident in himself and his work. He has always seemed to be an understanding and thoughtful person and this article solidifies my assumptions.

  4. As someone who loves Harry Styles, I immediately was drawn to this article. I think something that is so beautifully recognized in this piece is that culture inspires everyone. Styles has traveled all across the globe for his career, and I think this article did a great job explaining how as a TCA all of these other cultures have inspired him. This gives him more of a relatable trait which reminds us that we are all human and we all are touched and moved by the same things.

  5. This article was a quick read but full of detail which I really enjoyed. This was a really great example of cultural fluidity based on fashion and I really like Harry Styles which is why I clicked on the article in the first place. I never thought about how fashion could be an example of cultural influence but you did a great job at explaining how Harry Styles uses his fashion to showcase different cultures. I would have loved to see an entire gallery of his fashion statements as he always looks good in whatever he wears! I learned a lot about Harry Styles and his influence in the fashion community from this article.

  6. This article was a lot of fun to read. I’ve never been a huge Harry Styles fan, but I do appreciate his music, whether it’s with his band or solo. In the last few years, I’ve noticed that he has decent fashion sense. As stated in the essay, “all eyes are on you” as an artist, and it is difficult to let yourself to express your genuine self. But once you do, you’ll feel even more at comfortable, and if you’re confident in yourself, you’ll radiate that confidence to others.
