A banana was thrown at Dani Alves during the Villarreal vs. Barcelona match. Alves picked up the banana, peeled it, took a bite of it and resumed with the match.

On April 27, 2014, during a Spanish La Liga match up between Villarreal and Barcelona, Barcelona’s Brazilian right back Daniel Alves reacted in a mind blowing way to a racist distraction by the Villarreal crowd. Alves was getting ready to kick his corner kick and a banana was thrown at him. Alves picked up the banana, peeled it and ate the banana and continued on with his corner kick.

A banana being thrown into the football field is a racist symbolic gesture that a lot of the European football fans do to foreign players as a sign of calling them “Monkeys.”

The mind blowing reaction by Alves has triggered many football players to take pictures of themselves eating a banana and using the hashtag #WeAreAllMonkeys to show support in stopping racism.

An anti-racism banana campaign planned by Neymar Da Silva Santos Júnior has ignited many football players to support the anti-racism banana campaign by taking pictures of themselves eating a banana.

There were also rumors going around that Neymar Da Silva Santos Júnior, another one of Barcelona’s Brazilian forward, and Alves planned to do the reaction to racism well in advance, after the two were racially abused several times.

Planned or not planned, sports should be something that is entertaining to everyone and something that anyone with whatever color or ethnicity can participate without restriction. #WeAreAllMonkeys #sportsisjustsports.
